York is a walled city that was founded in seventy-one AD by the Romans. It is now a thriving city that has a lot to offer visitors and residents alike. One of the top sites to visit is the York Theatre Royal that was established in the seventeen hundreds.
This theatre was built on the grounds of the medieval St. Leonard?s Hospital. There are walls and archways that have been preserved that are still visible. A must see is the York Dungeon. It is a fantastic show that transports the visitor back to the dangerous times of witch hunting. It makes you feel that you are back in the sixteenth and seventeen century when witch burning was a favorite pastime. The York Dungeon show does its best to thrill and frighten. Kids under sixteen must come with a grownup.
The Yorvik Viking Centre takes you back one thousand years. It has new state-of-the-arts acoustics and video displays. It has the remains of a one thousand year old house up close and personal. In this centre, you will feel as if you are in the city of Jorvik in the Viking era. The experience is enhanced with the smell of cooking inside the Viking?s home and even smoke from the furnace!
The National Railway Museum has more than one hundred trains that tell the railway account from the nineteen century to today. In the nineteen century, the railway companies decided that it was important to conserve their history. The museum used to be a steam locomotive depot. It is close to York Minster and was a huge success from the first time that it opened its doors. It is one of Britain?s most popular museums and the most sought after railway museum in the world. There is certainly a lot to enjoy in York.
