We decided to start our exploration of Berlin by using the ‘see Berlin in one day’ tour from our guidebook. This advised us to head to Mitte, one of the regions of Berlin and have breakfast at one of the many cafes there. We had already breakfasted on the provisions we purchased last night from Lidl so we were just in search of a hot drink once we arrived in Mitte. There was a reasonable amount of choice but we settled on Starbucks in the hopes of finding WiFi. Hot drinks in hand we found a table and were able to access a wireless hotspot which allowed me to get the last three days of Blogs up (5th, 6th and 7th). Blog updated and loaded up on caffeine we headed out to the next stop on our tour, the Pergamon Museum. The Pergamon museum is one of the museums on the aptly named Museuminsel – Museum Island. The collections at the Pergamon museum include: The Museum of Islamic art, a collection of classical antiquities and the Museum of the Ancient Near East. There was also a special exhibition of items from Edmund de Underg’s collection of Islamic Art. Entry from: London, United Kingdom Entry Title: “In London” Entry: “I left Madrid less than two weeks ago and have already hit five cities in three countries. All in a day’s work! Cologne was my first stop, where I took advantage of the terrific Christmas markets and visited the fabulous Gothic Cathedral. I walked all over the city, tried some hot German wine and bratwurst while tring to keep my toes warm. I was only there for about two days, then I left to Strasbourg, making a brief stop in Heidelberg on the way. Heidelberg was a bit colder than Cologne, but really beautiful with its Christmas lights and markets, and a fantastic old ruined castle that fulfilled all my American imaginings about what an old European castle should be — piles of stones, tumbling towers, fabulous views of the kingdom and a moat (although now dry). After several hours and a hot chocolate to warm my cold insides on a rainy day, I got back on the train and arrived in Strasbourg. Still colder than Heidelberg, Strasbourg was the best yet. It’s a cross between Germany, France and Amsterdam (Amsterdam because there are c****s running thoroughout the old part of the city). Half-timbered, midevil buildings and beautiful neo-classical and French renaissance architecture, all decked out in lights for Christmas. Strasbourg had …

On Friday Rick was lucky enough to attend the Betfred Cup at Sandown Park horse racing track. It was a customer event for his work that turned into a pretty “serious” drinking session (the bill shows 15 bottles of wine, numerous mixer drinks and 88 bottles of Becks – all consumed by 10 people in around 4 hours). Rick ended up at a massive nightclub called Oceania somewhere in Kingston. After a couple more drinks and losing his fellow workmates he decided to call it a night and headed for the door. Twenty minutes later he found the exit and left (back at work on Tuesday he found out the other two guys also got lost in the place – it really was huge) to catch a bus back home. Luckily the bus was heading in the general direction of Clapham, though he did jump on another one somewhere out Wimbledon way. The next day he was very hung-over and had a really sore neck from lying in one of those strange drunken sleeping positions. With Bank May Day long weekend we decided to try and see some more of the local London sights. Our plans to visit Ireland were put on hold as the cost of flights sky rocketed on the long weekend. We jumped on a bus and headed down to Battersea Park …

My week in London is almost to an end and I wanted to share some highlights with you all. I arrived in London via Heathrow early last Monday. I’m using Marriott rewards points to stay at a Marriott in a middle class Northwest London neighborhood called Maida Vale. If you’ve seen the movie Notting Hill, it’s very close. There’s not much to see here, but it’s close to a Tube station (London Underground or subway) so it’s easy to get wherever I want to go. I’ve mastered the tube without difficulty but the buses are a bit more challenging. I got on the wrong bus once and ended up getting an in depth tour of the East End. So far, I’ve ridden the London Eye which is a 450 foot ferris wheel with clear capsules providing a 360 degree view of London; visited Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Hyde Park, St. James Park, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Portobello Market, and Tower Bridge; and made the trip to Cambridge. London is a really vibrant city. There are really two things to do in London, look at old stuff and shop. After a few days of palaces, museums, and statues, they all start to look alike. Some of them aren’t as impressive in person as they sound in the guide books …

Entry from: London, United Kingdom Entry Title: “Changing of the Guard” Entry: “Every other day from September – May the Queen’s guards put on a show while they change their shift at 11:30 am. In the summer they do it every day! This is called The Changing of the Guard. Steve and I woke up early again and went straight to Buckingham Palace to get a good spot to watch. We arrived at 10:30, but the place was already packed! I have no idea how we managed to score a spot front and center, but we did. We stood around for an hour while tons of people flooded in and were instructed where to go by the police on duty. Keeping watch on the group Steve and I were in was one cheery man. He kept a huge grin on the entire time and made pleasant conversation with the people in the crowd. We both agreed that he was the happiest cop wev’e ever seen. Our waiting was soon over and the changing began. Its really not that difficult to imagine, it’s almost like a short parade. A large group of men wearing traditional red British uniforms came marching in front of the crowd while they played their instruments. They then turned and entered the palace gates. Following them was another group of men in navy uniforms marching into the palace gates as well. After that I couldn’t see much because there were so many people …

Entry from: London, United Kingdom Entry Title: “Slug and Lettuce” Entry: “Ohhhh my head is a little sore this morning, but no rest for the wicked. Back into the swing of the tourist thing today. Off to South Kensington to see the Natural Museum of History. The cabbie drove past it when I arrived here. Such a grand and beautiful building. I just had to see it. It’s a fair way from Limehouse, but only one connection change at Bank, so it won’t take long. And it didn’t. I was there within 30mins. I rate the underground well. It’s not hard to find the museum, or any of the museums. There is signage for them, but the best thing is that there is a subway that leads to them. I’m not likely to get lost. When I emerged from the subway I’m, again!, just taken aback by the size and beauty of this building. It’s just awesome. It’s a nice sunny day, so the sunlight just brightens the museums grandeur. I’m of the opinion that museums are dull, dreary places. Not anymore. The queue to get in is long, but moving quickly and I’m inside within 20mins. Not bad for free entry hahaha. The first thing you see when you enter is, not including the security guards who check all bags, is a massive dinosaur skeleton. It’s huge. The main foyer is, and I know this is obvious but still needs to be said, just massive. It has a huge …

An 11 hour flight which arrived on the 22/11 & was about 5°C. We are staying in Victoria & had a few hours to kill before checking into our hotel so we just wondered around & saw the sights. London is all very old buildings, everything looks like a church or a castle. We had a fantastic Italian dinner & called it a night, it wasn’t hard seems it gets dark here at 4:30pm!! 23/11 – It snowed here last night so it is absolutely freezing, it is also raining which makes it very pleasant! We had our “Discovering London” tour today which took us to St Paul’s Cathedral which is pretty magnificent. The only church that is lager then it is St Peter’s church in Rome. We then really only got a glimpse at Big Ben, the Parliament Houses & Westminster Abbey cause the roads were closed to the Buckingham Palace cause it was Sunday. We got to walk past St James Palace which actually trumps Buckingham Palace authorisation wise. Clarance house is right next door to it, Prince Charles wasn’t home! We walked down to the Buckingham Palace but because of the rain we couldn’t get right up to the gates or spend too much time there. They didn’t do a changing of the guards cause of the weather but we did get to see them marching down the street. We did a cruise down …

Unfortunately I had to take the coach to London and back every night, so most of it was spent in a coach, but it was still a lot of fun. On Friday night we went to see Measure for Measure, which is a Shakespeare “Problem Play” as it is hard to classify. It was really well done, and we got to see it at an apparently prestigious theater, however because of the school budget our whole class was scattered throughout the theater and we were all behind poles. But the play was really well done, it was set in a modern context and it actually opened up with strippers which was really interesting, It was really funny to see my English prof’s face when that happened! Anyway after the play we headed back to the castle, and for me only to be up bright and early again to go to the Churchill War Cabinet Rooms which were really impressive. The complex was built during the WWII for Churchill and a Cabinet of initially 5 men, but later it grew to 8, done so so speed up the decision making process during the war. The Cabinet was located in a converted basement close to Parliament. Because of it’s location it was very susceptible to bombing and despite attempts at reinforcement, a direct hit would have killed anyone inside. So the facility relied on …

The journey ended up taking all day, unfortunately. all these trains, planes and buses! We got to our Piccadilly Hostel around 3:30 PM, got sandwiches and decided to go to the London Eye, a sort-of glass ferris wheel that you go up in for a half hour to see views of the cities. We wanted to go on it at sunset, but than we found out it was 35 pounds to ride, which is like sixty bucks! No thanks! Disappointed, we drown ourselves in traditional fish and chips, or at least I did! We then walked around the Thames River, and saw a young English hippie playing his guitar and singing Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan songs. He was so good! We started dancing to his music and talked to him for awhile. After we make a new friend, we do some window shopping and go back to the hostel for a good nights sleep. On the 28th we wake up early than head to Baker Street to find a vintage Beatles shop. We buy a couple souvenirs; I got a vintage Abbey Road record and tee shirt, and Kim bout a tee shirt and wallet. We see a poster for a Rock Legends Tour and call from a pay phone to schedule it! They pretty much take you to all the rock legends old studios and houses. So neat! We then go to the Salvador Dali Museum to see lots of his sketches, sculptures and …
