Newcastle

Newcastle upon Tyne is located in Northeast England. The city is the site of the Roman community of Pons Aelius. By the 16th century, it had one of the world’s major shipyards. In contemporary Newcastle upon Tyne, often shortened to the name, Newcastle, a major goal is becoming the first completely Carbon Neutral metropolis. One of the most strikingly eye-catching architectural achievements of Newcastle is the Tyne Bridge, a through arch bridge connecting across the Tyne the two cities of Newcastle and Gatehead. Of course, the Castle of the city is one of its most significant landmarks, and people can tour this site. The city’s name is a result of the castle built in 1080 by Robert II, Duke of Normandy. He was the oldest son born to William the Conqueror. At the heart of the historic district is Grainger Town. Built during the early 1800s, there are fine streets and stately buildings featuring Georgian architecture.

Especially, the downtown cultural section of the city has much to offer. Chinatown celebrates the wonderful foods and festivals of the Chinese people. Many of the first Chinese to Newcastle at the turn of the twentieth century were seamen and merchant marines. Besides thriving Chinatown, Newcastle is known for being one of the UK’s top nightlife scenes. There are fabulous restaurants offering a wide range of international cuisines. There are many theatres, festivals, cinema, music and more.

Additionally, the sport of football has a long tradition in the city. The Newcastle United Club began in 1892. Other examples of the many sports in the city are football, horseracing, basketball, hockey and the speedway.
