Family Days Out

Keeping in line with the tradition of family values, it is important to keep a family unit feeling close-knit and encourage opportunities to bond. A good way to inject some spirit into how families spend their quality time together is by going on days out. I personally believe that days out should be enjoyable, something for the whole family to join in on. This is why now more than ever it is imperative that we are getting that variety to break up the monotony of working life for adults and the long hours that children spend at school every week.

One of the most interesting ideas which have come about recently is the experience day. There are many variations of experience days and these are ideal gift ideas which are fun for the whole family. Each package offers a different memorable experience, from hotel breaks and adventure days to cultural visits and gourmet meals, these getaways are almost similar to mini-holidays.

Speaking of going on a special adventure, why not choose to go on a boat party? There is much fun to be had especially for those who have never been on a boat before or perhaps can’t swim but still love to be around an aqueous atmosphere. Water is a popular attraction not just from a sporting point of view but also for its relaxation properties too… the thought of getting away from a busy city and escaping to a land of peace is what people dream about.

canal boatSo if you would like to try out one of the countless different types of experience days, I would highly recommend Floating Boaters for their cultural boat hire services. They are based down in London and offer two different boats to experience depending on the size of your party and the type of event you want to go for. Maybe you would like to arrange a small get together with your closest family and friends? In that case, London boat parties are perfect for you as they are a great excuse to visit England’s capital, they often include gourmet dining and are always themed around your requirements.

So whether it’s your child’s birthday party, or a wedding reception, hiring a boat is the perfect experience day for you and your family.

landscapes not too far from your doorstep if you know where to look! The subtle colours and shapes of places like the Lake District, the New Forest or the Scottish Highlands are teeming with entertainment that can be seen from the comfort of your home. The South of England for

Regeneration of rejected King’s Cross

King’s Cross has been overwhelmingly neglected as a main part of the city of London for many years. A popular place to live from the Victorian times onwards, King’s Cross has grown in population, but also in wear and tear. As the home of St Pancras station, King’s cross is the gateway to London for millions of tourists each year, so it’s about time something has been done to spruce it up a little.

With the opening of Granary Square in June 2012, King’s Cross is now home to one of the biggest public spaces in Europe. And what is the hope for these recent regeneration developments? Many argue that the prospect of Britain once again be owned privately by different estates, for example Liverpool One by the Duke of Westminster Grosvenor estate, and Brindleyplace in Birmingham jointly owned by Hines and Moorfield are great for the growing industry of department retail, but not so much for community spirit.

And this is exactly why the area of King’s Cross has been sectioned off, as public space, for the public. With the new refurbishment of the station half under way and the recent opening of the St. Pancras hotel, King’s Cross is starting to bring back the individuality it always had as a bohemian area of London.

With different cultures all on one doorstep, and a diversity of religions, beliefs and ways of life, King’s Cross is back on the map. With Cheap hotels in King’s Cross, you’re never far from the hustle and bustle of London life, and the gateway to Europe via the Eurostar. With a range of fetes and festivals all throughout the year, it is now finally the time of King’s Cross to celebrate being one of the best parts of London.

Language Tuition in London

Learning a foreign language is an ideal way to keep the adult brain active and alert.  Along with memory improvement and cognitive enhancements, learning a foreign language can offer you a wonderful social enrichment for when you travel. London is the most cultural and metropolitan city in the UK, and there are hundreds of different languages spoken everyday. What we learn in school is just basic french, german or spanish, and most of the time, when leaving school at 16, we forget all but the bare backbones by age 21. Also, there seems to be myth surrounding learning a foreign language when you’re an adult, but it’s not true. You don’t necessarily learn languages better as a child, in fact, it doesn’t matter what age you learn a language, everyone learns at the same level. There are many language courses available, including French lessons in London that you can attend full time or part time at home with the comforts of telephone and email advice, as well as regular meet ups to check your progress.

Another benefit of learning a second language is the increased compassion and understanding for foreign cultures. Fighting stereotypes across a city like London is a great achievement with learning a second language and opens new doors to new experiences in a place so familiar yet unfamiliar, enabling you to build a new community in your already existing one.

As for travelling abroad, by making the effort to converse to people in their native language rather than assuming they speak english, you are instantaneously integrated into their local culture, and will gain more experiences by being able to communicate properly. The simple act of trying to express oneself in the other language shows a respect that is usually appreciated.

Another benefit of having a second language comes in the form of CV’s and resumes. Most people overlook this factor when applying for jobs, and the simple act of speaking another language can drastically boost your chances of your dream job. Employers are impressed at someone who is able to communicate and converse with clients over other nationalities. It is a valuable asset to any CV and will guarantee you more success in the working world

Seeking out Halal in London

Visiting London presents you with thousands of tourism options, landmarks to see, places to explore and restaurants to dine in. However, what do you do in London if you have specific dietary requirements such as halal?

Halal meat is much more than food slaughtered in a specific way, it is a blessed and sacred delicacy of the islamic culture. It cannot be cooked with alcohol, nor can it be cooked with any other meats. This includes any pork, or animals (carnivores) that have ingested any other animals. The meat is to be kept separate at all times, in order to keep it from becoming contiminated with any other substances.

The way halal meat is killed for consumption is deemed the most respectful way to the animal, as the swift incision to the throat immediately cuts off the blood supply, rendering the animal brain dead. It is kinder than any other mode of western slaughter and is also very hygenic. The intention behind all of this is to ensure that the meat is fresh and free of impurities, the animal is given proper respect and Allah is thanked for providing us with food.

Sometimes when visiting another place from home, taking into your dietary requirements beforehand seems a lot of effort and slightly unfair that not everywhere caters for you. This is a hard enough job for vegetarians and vegans, let alone halal eaters. London based halal restuarants are springing up all over the capital, ensuring that new and regular visitors have all the dietary needs they would encounter at home.

Food stalls set up in Camden market are abundant with different foods from different cultures and feature a few halal stalls, but they close at around 7-8pm a night, therefore if you’re looking for somewhere to eat halal, heading further out from the centre will do you many favours, and your pocket too.

Olympic Preparations for 2012

With the Olympics only a week away, preparations will be almost complete for the vast numbers of spectators, competitors and support staff that are expected. The sheer amount of preparation that has been going on for years to ensure this Olympic event is a success is mind-boggling, and so it I think it is necessary for us to truly appreciate just what has been done to help Britain put on an event that will stand the test of time.

The Olympic Park is a testament to the hard work that has been put into the 2012 Olympic Games.

Public Transport

When London originally bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games during 2004 and 2005, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) scored the public transport infrastructure quite poorly, but were confident that London would be able to improve it to an acceptable level by the time the Games occurred.

Since the bid was won, there have been many improvements made to London’s public transport system, including:

  • London Overground’s East London Line
  • Docklands Light Railway
  • North London Line
  • The new “Javelin” high speed train service
  • £25 million cable car over the River Thames
  • Multiple park and ride sites

Venues and Local Infrastructure

Many new venues have been built in order to house events, and so a vast new infrastructure has had to be incorporated into this construction. Much land in London has been bought up and converted to Olympic uses, such as the 500 acre Olympic Park.

The Olympic Park has been transformed from industrial land into a green and verdant area that both Games visitors and local residents can enjoy. It houses the Olympic Village, where all of the competitors will reside, and in addition to this is home to the Olympic Stadium and Aquatics Centre.

The Olympic Javelin service is a new high speed service between St Pancras and Ebbsfleet.

Stadia and Seating

The vast amount of seating and equipment required is staggering, not only in the Olympic Stadium and other sports venues, but at the outdoor events too. Hundreds of event equipment hire companies must have been enlisted to provide the spectators with enough seating, as there are sure to be hundreds, if not thousands, of them wanting to see the marathons, cycling, sailing and other events.

Art Antiques London 2012

If you are in or around London between the 14th and 20th of June, it is highly recommended that you visit the Art Antiques exhibit, which takes place annually. This year’s attraction once again bought together art dealers from London and the world over to showcase an astounding range of rare antiques and unique artistic talent. This was the fair’s third showing since it first manifested in 2010, boasting as many as 15,500 visitors and significant sales across all disciplines. This fair has built up a reputation for drawing in connoisseurs and collectors from every corner of the globe to purchase these unusual and in some cases, extremely rare works. The location really was the perfect setting for the exhibition, Kensington Gardens being located close to Albert Memorial which in itself could be described as having an artistic aesthetic.

Prior to the event Art Antiques London organised an excellent dinner and reception as well as an acoustic set which boasted the likes of Jake Shears from Scissor Sisters; both of which played a huge part in enriching the electric atmosphere of the forthcoming exhibition. Much was made of the social enjoyment derived from the fair’s ability to draw like-minded and knowledgeable collectors together. In this regard one particular highlight was an extremely informative and professional lecture given by Doctor Jonathan Marsden (director of the Royal Collection) in honour of the Queen’s Jubilee - which acted to highlight the royal collection’s importance.

Exhibitor and fair organiser Brian Haughton

It is evident that the fair is only improving with each year as it gains more and more prominence within the artistic community. One can only look forward to next year’s exhibition with eager anticipation.

Heathrow Travel

Before you go on holiday, it is often beneficial to think about how you are getting to the airport well in advance of the date you leave. If you are taking your own car and need to book parking first, you need to be particularly on top of planning. Heathrow aiport lies just 20 miles outside of the centre of London, and there are many options for you to consider depending on how much baggage you have and your budget.

National Express run around three coaches an hour to London Victoria Coach station which take between 35 minutes and an hour. Costing around £4-7 it is worth booking your coach in advance to guarantee getting the best price. They also run a hotel transfer service from the airport called the “Heathrow Hoppa” which offers plenty of space for your baggage and air conditioning on board.

There is also a good train service connecting Heathrow with the centre of London, operating between terminals 1,2 and 3 and Paddington station in the west of London. These trains operate every half an hour and take about 25 minutes, but you should be aware that travel and oyster cards’ can’t be used on this service.

If you have a lot of baggage and don’t mind forking out then there are many Windsor taxis who can take the hassle out of your journey for you. Picking you up straight from your door and taking you straight to your terminal, a taxi offers a more convenient way to travel and is particularly good for families or groups who would be willing to split the costs.

If you’re worried about your environmental impact then LondonLiftShare could offer you the perfect solution to public transport. Check out their website to find others who are making the same journey as you.

Alternatively, you could park at the airport. Although short stay parks tend to be very expensive there are loads of deals to be found on the internet and can offer you some great prices. You should beware of congestion charges though and make sure you set off with plenty of time to spare to avoid getting stuck in traffic.

London

Buckingham Palace, the main residence of the Queen of England is situated in the capital city of London. This rather busy megalopolis, houses many important venues, some political, some historical, but all that should be in included in your next trip to the capital of England.

Most international visitors to London arrive through Heathrow airport, however, if you are coming in from the south it is possible to take the channel tunnel (Chunnel) from France (Calais)and connect through Folkestone, just south east of London. Most international destinations fly directly into Heathrow airport, making your arrival into London as easy as booking your flight and boarding your scheduled departure.

There is much to see and do in London, so come prepared to experience everything. A sight to see if ever there was one is the London eye, which is prepared to give you the ride and view of your life. As tall and impressive as the tower bridge stands over the Thames River, it is impossible to miss this monumental masterpiece which is open to the public.

If you go nowhere else while in London, make sure you include Buckingham Palace in your adventure, as a greater historical landmark there may never be. London could very well be the melting pot of the entire world and it shows through the variety of dining establishments available to you. Whether your preference is seafood, (sublime Dartmouth crab) Japanese, (sushi) or Indian, (Seekh kebabs) there is something to tempt every palette.

With such a wide population calling London their home, is there any wonder that nightlife is as popular as it is? A favorite for most residents, would be the local pubs, where you can enjoy beer on tap or pretty much anyway you like it. Comedy clubs and local theatres reflect some of the finest forms of entertainment available at the time. If you would prefer to dance the night away, live music and or club music can be found dotted around the streets of London. Travelers are always welcome to visit the many shops around London, however, some of the more interesting shopping experiences are likely to take place at the markets.
